Hi guys, I'm travelling around east coast australia for 5 months (Oct-Feb) and then flying to Bangkok for an organised trip. I'm planning on taking a suitcase for Australia as i am mainly staying in houses and hostels and not really going on any adventures however for my trip in Bangkok suitcases aren't suitable as we are on and off buses, hotels etc and they have advised all travellers have a backpack...
I've stored bags in hotels around Kao San Road a number times, sometimes for a few weeks. Most hotels will do it for a fairly cheap daily fee.
I have never had a problem with theft yet, though I could also have been lucky. Though hotel staff may not steal things, the bags are usually just put into a small room near reception and people come and go getting their bags and moving things around. So there is always a chance that your bag could get nicked or misplaced. I think it's safe enough, but I wouldn't leave anything valuable, and try to get a lock for it if possible.
I don't understand why you need the suitcase - you must think it's easier to unpack/pack and carry? I think that if you have a good pack, and don't overload it with things you don't really need, you can use this pack for all of your travels.
