Hello all,
Hey,
I'm in Brisbane at the moment after arriving from the UK 3 weeks ago on a WHV. I've been looking for work.. and yes i'm finding it difficult. I've been applying for office/ admin jobs, how about you?
Glad to hear I'm not alone!
Yes I've been applying to anything I can find. I've had call backs and then when they find out what visa I have they say that they don't employ people with that visa. Very frustrating!
Where abouts in Brisbane are you?
How are you finding Brisbane? Maybe want to swap FBs?
Hmm that's not too encouraging! I get to Brisbane a month from now and hoping to find work. Long shot I know but have you guys seen many chef/cook jobs being advertised? Perhaps it's harder to find work as it's heading into winter?
You would think with a WHV things like bar work should be relatively easy to find as there is such a high turnover of people working in hospitality. Admin/office work a little harder as they would probably want more long term employees. I have no idea what to expect in Brisbane so will see when I get there, good luck to both of you with your search!
One thing I found (way back when - and limited sample, of course) was that "regular" job search sites (like seek) mostly have people looking for long-term employees, and so indeed have no interest in people on a WHV. But there's a lot of temp staffing agencies, and probably also job search sites more geared toward working on a project-basis or for freelancers; and there, being on a WHV can actually be a plus. I don't know of any "general" job search site like that - but I'd do some searching around for one all the same. (And seek does have a "contract/temp" option under "more options". Limiting your searches to that might make a difference with getting some better responses?)
I just sent you a message Nicole
I have seen a few chef jobs actually so there are some about.. good luck to you too!
Ive registered with a few agencies & i have only been applying for contract/ temp jobs on websites such as seek so hopefully someone will get back to me soon. Thanks for the advice though.
