Some things you may what to think about when planning your route is weather. You're going in December so be aware that the a lot of the cities on your trip get snow and a lot of it. New York, Philadelphia, and Nashville all get snow so be prepared for some sketchy driving (I assume you are driving?) If you go to the west coast weather is less of a problem as it's pretty much always sunny in that part of the world. My favorite cities are on the west coast anyway, I'd suggest spending a couple days in San Francisco and in San Diego. I've never been to Los Angeles but I've heard very mixed things about it. If you're looking for places in the south New Orleans is a must see as is Austin, Texas. I'd head to some of the National Park in Utah like Arches and Yosemite in California.
