August in Scotland

Hi every body,

Good choice, the Highlands are great.

You could take a tour with someone like Haggis Adventures or macbackpackers, I've not done one but they seem good itineraries.

You could take the train - west highland line to fort william is scenic then continue to mallaig and you can take the ferry on day trips to some great islands like rum and eigg. You could then bus it to oban which is another ferry port base, they offer a 3 islands daytrip to mull, staffa and iona - recommended! Staffa is giant's causeway type blockwork but better.

Or hire a car for more freedom to explore - i'd do this if you're travelling up there for a week or more.

The west highlands are the good bit, though Orkney is great if you're into prehistory.

A car is good. I did it years ago. A good map is needed. Parking is fairly expensive.

Weather should be OK in August but crowds of people about, rooms full up and everything top priced. I went September and had good weather but you can have bad weather that time of year.

Look at a Scottish tourist site as to where to go. Castles, Lochs, ruins, towns, John O'Groats, islands, etc.

August is the festival time so, it is good to visit Edinburgh during this period.

Scotland has 3 main national routes that allows the visitors to drive to Edinburgh. The roads are very good and are well signposted. Parking facility is not a major problem in Edinburgh.

Search online to find more suggestions on best places to drive outside Edinburgh.

Thank you everybody for the posts.

I'm leaving on thursday, my final choice is to spend 4 days in Edinburgh to enjoy the Fringe festival and other 5 day with MacBackparkers up in the north LochNess, Inverness, Skye Oban.

Sounds a good choice if you're going for such a brief time. Would you let us know how the tour is?

Hi Everybody

I really enjoyed my Scottish experience!
I've been in Edimburgh and I spent two days in the Fife region, visited St. Andrews (nice) and then did the Tour with MacBackpackers.
It is much better especially if you're travelling by yourself, the guide was a proud Scottish highlander and we went to amazing places and discovered a lot of stuff about Scottish heritage and tradition.
I really reccommend it, you just need to be lucky with the wheater.

And the Fringe festival in Edinburgh is completely crazy, either if you like to party or you prefer enjoying shows theatre and live music.

Andrea
