Motorcycle traveling in India OCT?, 2013-FEB?, 2014

Planning to travel from Mumbai north for a month far west side, month return to Mumbai inland, then month south on coast to tip of India around to Pudicherry then month back to Mumbai across the center. Anyone interested in joining me? All dates, routes and times are completely arbitrary. Have budgeted 4 months and seems for where I'm going Oct-Feb are the ideal months.

please mention the details . I am planning to go to Ladakh on motorcycle.

do you need any sort of license to drive around in india?

Of course you do. You need a Motorcycle Drivers Licence from your home country and in many cases an International Drivers Licence as well.

Terry

do you know how well this is monitored? ive been all over thailand. vietnam and myanmar on bikes without a license and never had a problem. would this be the case with india?

If you cross the border into India they want to see Licence and Insurance before you're allowed entry. If you ship your bike into India they want to see Licence and Insurance and Registration before they'll release the bike. Lastly, I've never seen a legitimate motorcycle rental agency that didn't want to see a Licence for sure and usually an International Drivers Licence too.

What's the problem for you to simply get your Licence and be done with it?

Wow that's the exact opposite experience I had. I'm not sure what your definition of legitimate rental agency is, but for India I never saw one. Never saw anyone ever asked for a motorcycle endorsement on a license. But then you have a LOT more experience than anyone else with motorcycles in India, after all you own one there right?

Didn't see him asking anything about crossing borders or shipping his bike.

1.) "... I'm not sure what your definition of legitimate rental agency is, but for India I never saw one..."

That's odd because they're very common.

Here's two top notch legitimate rental/lease companies that I use and recommend in my home base, Mumbai:

2.) "... Didn't see him asking anything about crossing borders or shipping his bike..."

I received a couple of PMs from some guys who were interested in shipping and/or crossing the border on their bikes so I answered their queries as well in case someone in the future used the Search Function on the forum for info about "bikes in India" and this thread happened to pop up.

Anything else I can help you with regarding motorcycling in India (or the many other places I've been around the world as well) then please don't hesitate to ask, I'm always ready to help newbies.

Rubber-side down, amigo!

I certainly hope I'll never need that.

Me too, but the fact that you couldn't manage to find any reputable motorcycle rental companies in India is worrisome.

In any case there's a wealth of information on the Internet covering motorcycle touring through just about any place on the entire planet. It's an easy subject to research.

Google is your friend. Better luck next time!

Terry
