My girlfriend and I are hoping to go hit Oz in December on a WHV
What time of year would anyone suggest was best for work, i'm guessing that in the run up to Xmas there won't be much about
I work in food retail, and she works In Care atm, but has done bar work previously! We are 26 and 21
Probably fly to Cairns as looks like the hostels aren't too much there, Sydney over Xmas is extortionate
Any feedback would be great and much appreciated

The reason hostels in Cairns are so cheap that time of the year is that it's the start of the wet season (which lasts through March), which causes people to generally avoid being up north - think high humidity interspersed with torrential rains (you might remember big floods around Brisbane having been in the news twice over the last few years). Some people think that it's not all bad, but at least be prepared for it.
You're right that work-wise most things wind down in the run-up to xmas. Picks back up with a vengeance on Jan 2nd, though. For bar work, I'm guessing the peak for work is actually during Dec/Jan, but recruiting for that happens in October.
