You only get 30 days visa free on entry to Thailand so either get a 60 day visa or visit another country close by. Flight gets you another 30 days and bus or train, just 15 days. AirAsia is quite cheap if booked early.
Australia is quite expensive. Book your first few nights at least. An Accommodation link at the top of the page.
You are travelling well trod routes so lots and lots of other tourists about, with many on their own and first timers like you.

I'm hoping to be in the Sydney area around that time. I'm heading over to Melbourne in October, but plan to be in Sydney for the NYE period then hopefully stay after.

Seems like once you're out there you might as well stay the whole year.
I'm hoping to spend some time in Sydney, so should still be there around then. I'm not sure about being a veteran, but I'll show you the ropes if you like and maybe I'll give you some tips on backpacking too if you like ..........I'm sorry that was awful but you basically set it up for me and I couldn't resist.

In my defence.......ok there really isn't one, but I knew straight away that it was lame.
Yeah that's the plan. I'm starting in Melbourne then want to work my away around the east coast, the plan being to end up in Cairns. Perth is west coast though and I can't see me making it there....although you never know I suppose.
