Hey Terry,
more so the last point of contact thing, I've hitched a few times myself and picked up hitchers many times in NZ and Oz.
Now as much as I've been lucky to get a safe ride, some unfortunately haven't so and have not been heard from again or had any clues leading to their whereabouts, hence when that aussy guy got arrested for the backpacker murders, I thought if my daughter ever hitched a ride, what could she use(that a "even a child" could use) do to at least send me some info on the ride she just got, you know something to go on if anything bad ever happened.
I have seen some apps that send location/gps co-ordinates but most are live tracking apps and not a lot of people want to be tracked 24/7, so therefore don't get used.

I would think that a quick photo of the license plate/vehicle and the driver would accomplish the same thing as opposed to some kind of an app...

And that I've done, created a single tap actioned app that does just that, takes a pic, records sound so you get the drivers name and sends off gps coordinates of location, to one if not more people anywhere around the world.
The problem with what you just mentioned is that that action takes time to take a pic an searching for a contact to send to which could take many 10's of seconds or even a minute as opposed to a few seconds, which could mean a very big difference if a situation arose.
I just thought with many sites advocating what precautions to take when hitching/travelling, something simple would be readily available for a mobile phone, hence why I'm asking about if people who frequent these sites, use such devices for precautionary measures?.
I have a video(some sound not completed though) that I made that shows how an app can be used for hitching but it contravenes the terms and conditions of this site so can't show it.(has my website in it)
