What is the best way to divide / handle / ??? my money when I am in SEA for 2 months. I am going to Thailand, Cambodia, Bali and Burma from Australia. WIll also be stopping in KL Airport and maybe extending my trip to Vietnam depending on how much money I have left
hey there!
I am currently living in thailand and I'm not exactly sure what you mean by divide/handle but living/traveling through thailand is super cheap! you can find buses, boats, trains from country to country at a fairly reasonable price. and although I'm not positive for the other countries, day to day expenses in thailand are extremely cheap. street food which can suffice for almost every meal ranges from 10-60 baht (and its about 30 baht to 1USD, sorry i don't know where you are from to convert) and depending on how you want to live each night I've stayed in a range of hostels from real nice (which means aircon, hot water and comfy bed--which was around 400 baht a night) to a mattress on the floor and a net hanging above and your can see through the floor boards -- which was about 100 baht a night)
personally i would recommend cash but my situation is slightly different so I'm not positive what would be best for you :/
hope this helps a little bit! and happy travels!!
sorry I mean in terms of should I use cash, a debit card, travel money card, etc
Your Aussy bank card will work in all those country's. Even Burma is easy now and has a few cash machines. When you use your card, you just take out the max amount allowed so as to cut down on bank fees.
When I travelled south east asia I took a travel card! Works at all the atm's free, you just top them up through your own bank account online! Very easy! I also took my usual bank card just in case, but was charged for withdrawals! Google 'Escape travel money' that's what I used but not sure if your coming from Australia if it will work
A prepaid travel card definitely! I used the escape one.
I didn't do that on my first travel trip and just used my normal bank card. Even though I told the bank prior to going which countries I'd be in they still canceled the card on several occasions.
Really annoying and expensive on phone calls to get it unblocked
Only thing I have to add is have a few cards and split your money. In case of loss, theft, card being cancelled etc.
I try to use a day wallet with just enough money in for that day and one prepaid debit card. Then a main wallet that lives in my main pack with a second card and the bulk of the cash. Then a hidden stash with a third card and emergency cash.
This way you've something to give up to a mugger, fallbacks if you lose one, and are only carrying everything on travel days.
I also don't take my main account card with me. I've seen the suggestion that you just set things up to be able to use it to top up the travel cards online. Myself I don't do that, I just get the money in the right place before I travel but then I'm not travelling for long periods at the moment. I also like to arrive holding local currency so I prebuy some.
