Hi, my girlfriend and I have our flights booked to sri lanka for 3 weeks at the end of January. 3 years ago we returned home from our 9 month trip to SEA, Aus and NZ, and hadnt had an holiday since. We originally planned on a trip to India but decided against it in favor of sri lanka! (for now at least).
The interior doesn't really take too long. Most tours either do a short loop hitting dambulla polonaruwa sigirya kandy or a version going further south too by adding nuara eliya for the tea plantations and horton plains or adam's peak followed by a safari in Yala and looping back via Galle. Tour companies manage all this in as little as a week.
Sigiriya and the temple of the tooth in Kandy are to me the stand-out attractions that are different to Cambodia or Thailand. After that, the temples are a nice fusion of buddhism with hinduism but nothing amazingly new for you.
Even travelling independently and doing those plus the hill stations your week or ten days will kill it.
Thanks Andy! Your recommendation is pretty much what I have been looking at! Would you recommend Colombo or negombo when we arrive?
