I'm also landing in Ho Chi Minh on 10th (from Thailand on a year-long RTW). Even though I'm not looking for a travel companion, I don't mind being available if you ever feel uneasy. Presume you're a confident solo traveller though.
SE Asia is easily one of the safest places in the world, from muggings anyway. Wouldn't same the same about safety in the roads!

Where are planning to see in Vietnam?

I'm going to be delayed getting to Vietnam because of a hiking injury yesterday in Thailand. Have to check out where I stand with my visa! But if they'll still let me in, then the idea is to head north (all "overland") to Hanoi/Hai Phong, then into China towards Hong Kong. I haven't got a set agenda but I'd think Vinh, Danang & Hué will be stops. Ultimately though, I'm aiming to climb Fansipan, if I'm well enough.

If you've got a couple of weeks, you should see more of Vietnam. Hoi An is also very nice. That's where people go to get custom tailored suits, shirts & dresses made. Ninh Binh is also a quiet smaller city. You can hire a scooter there and ride up the mountains (with or without a guide) without the crazy traffic of the big cities.
As for lodging in Ho Chi Minh, I would definitely recommend Long Hostel. The family running the place is the nicest ever and the facilities are clean as well. I may head back there in mid-February, but hopefully by then, you would have seen a lot more than just Ho Chi Minh & Hue.

Im starting in Hue, then my plan is Hoi an, Dalat, Mekong Delta, Phu quoc and end up in Ho Chi Minh. If theres anywhere else along the way you'd recommend then let me know!

You can get by Da Nang. It's near Hue with warm beach, nice view.
Those should be some interesting places. I've heard Da Nang was really nice as well, but I've never been there. Phu Quoc sounds great too and I've been wanting to go so you'll have to let me know how that is.
I'm surprised you picked Da Lat. It's a quaint little town. Not that much to do there, but it's nice. It's a little bit cooler than the rest of the other places you'll visit in Vietnam so it's a nice break from the heat. If you haven't booked lodging there yet, Hai Long Vuong is a nice guesthouse with a very friendly family running the place. I stayed there last time. Tell them Kevin Ducati sent you.

If theres anywhere else you'd recommend let me know. Ive heard Con Doa's good as an alternative to Phu Quoc, so I need to decide between them too.
Hmm, I haven't heard of Con Doa. Do let me know how that or Phu Quoc is. I may head back to Vietnam in March. Safe travels!
