My advice, go get your backpack, stick it on your back walk out of your door and don't look back - as you never will!
Best thing is to go solo! You will enjoy it, and you will make friends all along the way. Just the moment you arrive in hostels, stick your stuff down find out where everyone is hanging, go in and say hello! As long as you talk to people you will be fine. Most people are on there own, it just they meet people and they become groups for a bit, but we are all in the same situation.
I left the UK in October 2012 , travelled to Singapore on my own, and was in a hostel dorm room with two canadians and an english girl. We still chat now.
After that i went to Australia, had a week in an organised group - it was good but i look back now and i never needed it. After that stayed and lived in Sydney with a bit of travel Australia for a year. Went traveling around Fiji and South East Asia for a bit before returning to Australia for a short period and now i am in a hostel in New Zealand.
I return to the UK in august for a month's holiday home .... before returning to New Zealand and then more traveling.

I feel kind of the same way as you do...I never travelled alone so far and now I'm planning a trip to South america for 2 month...Actually BECAUSE I'm afraid of being alone I'm planing this trip, so I can develop as a person...I hope to make some experiences important for my life.
So I'd recommend you, to just do it!
Hello! I have traveled alone but to a state where I knew someone. It was a lot of fun and I didn't really have anything to worry about.
I have just returned from 3 weeks driving around Ireland on my own and I am close to 60. Of course you can do it and you will enjoy it.
Get a nice big travel backpack with the waist strap, and another smaller backpack to wear in front. The small one will slightly balance the weight and you store your valuables in that one. You leave your big backpack full of dirty laundry anywhere, then lock or carry the small pack with you. If you stay at a hotel alone, it gets a bit lonely. Stay in hostels and you will meet lots of young people. Go to the hostel lounge and say hi to everyone there. Guaranteed Fun!
