Maybe a good thing you haven't booked internal flights yet... Are there particular things keeping you to those dates in each city? Or could you do Sydney > Uluru and continue the loop to get cheaper flights?
Regarding meeting people, if you're staying in a hostel it is very easy to meet other travellers and they usually always have some kind of social mixers (cheap drinks nights, activities, etc) to help. Check out the Accommodation tab at the top of the page for properties reviewed and recommended by TP members.

Hi,
Those dates are set in stone, as I will be meeting my friend now in perth, so wont be exactly alone, but Ill defintely be by myself in sydney for a few days. I spoken to my friend and she suggested bounce hostel. Id like to meet new people as well but dont want a hostel that is going to be rowdy and loud as I would want to sightsee as well.
