My family and I will be leaving for a 19 day trip through Europe in early April and we will be visiting London, Paris then Madrid. We have been to London and Paris once before but I would love any suggestions you might have. In London we are staying in County Hall which is behind the London Eye and its closest to the Westminster and Waterloo tube stations. In Paris we are staying in Rue Cler. When it comes to Madrid I have no idea. I have never been there and I haven't been getting much help searching the web either. We will be staying in Hostal Gonzalo which is across from the Prado Museum and a few blocks down from the Plaza de Canovas del Castillo. I am not opposed to traveling a distance for a good meal so any suggestions would be very helpful. In Madrid we are particularly looking for affordable Tapas Bars and restaurant's with relatively inexpensive Menu Del Dia. Please don't hesitate with your recommendations. I love a good adventurous meal . Thanks!
The area around the hostal is called Huertas and you will find lots of nice restaurants/tapa bars there. There is limited access for cars so it will be easy to stroll around, just be a bit careful at night.
I took my parents to Maceira (Calle de Jesus 7) where they serve a delioucious Galician-style octopus and other tapas.
Other nice and reasonably priced options were Las bravas and La Finca de Susana.
And if you woul like to check out a different area, go to La Latina, it became very hip lately and you will find a good range of tapa bars there.
hope this helps,
Steff
In London we ate at a fantastic Thai called Mango Tree which is in Belgravia (New Buck Palace) closed tube is Victoria and a quick 5 min walk. Was great too doing 50% food bill when we were there. Can book via their website - just google Mango Tree.
In London, you must have a dinner at the Best Mangal restaurant in West Kensington. It is a Turksih BBQ restaurant with various meats (beef, chicken, lamb, quali, etc).
It doesn't look to flash from the outside, and it's pretty ordinary on the inside, but the food is first class, the prices are cheap, and it's immensely popular.
There is a hot charcoal BBQ in the middle of the restaurant where they cook the food.
I used to live in London, and I must have been to this restaurant about 50 times.
The address is 104, North End Road, West Kensington and is less than 5 minute walk from the tube station. Catch the tube to West Kensington (District Line - green), turn left at the top of the stairs, cross the road, and it's on your right.
Thanks for all of the suggestions I have definitely put the Best Mangal on my list. Big thanks to Steff for all of the background info on the area, very very helpful! Purdy thanks for the suggestion about The Mango Tree it looks amazing! Thanks again!
in madrid you should try the typical 'bocadillo de calamares' more than a tapas, as Granada and Seville are better cities for tapas.
In madrid try to find 'museo de jamon' they have really cheap dishes and drinks, as well as the chain tapas bar '100 montaditos' (quality is poor, though)
