Im in Sydney at the moment but planning on travelling up the East Coast at the end of the March/Beginning of April. I want to spend a couple of weeks travelling up as far as Cairns, then either stay up there and work for a month or fly back to Sydney.
If anyone has the same plans, or any tips on where i should stop off along the way pls let me know, oh and is it better to travel by bus or train, thanks x
Stop in as many places as you can going up the east coast. Northern NSW and SE Qld are especially nice; especially Byron Bay, Lismore, Nimbin (interesting). Then in Qld, Surfers Paradise, Sunshine coast and Noosa. Rainbow Beach (near Tin Can Bay) must be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and a lot of tourists overlook it as the Gold Coast tends to draw them away.
What to bypass: Gympie, Rockhampton (I was bought up there and I can tell you it is a hole), and Townsville. Everything else should be good.
There will be more than one bus company but only one train co (Qld rail), so you will probably get a better deal on the bus. You will meet lots more travellers on the bus while a lot of deadshit locals travel by train.
Hope this helps
If you are into sailing you should definitely stop at Airlie Beach and go on a trip to beautiful Whitsunday Islands. A 3-day-tour on Fraser Island is fun and Cape Tribulation/Daintree rainforest just north of Cairns were my favourite places on the East Coast.

I'm looking to do exactly the same thing, but around July/August. Struggling to know where to go/how to travel up there, whilst getting a proper backpacker experience.
Anything you learn whilst going up the East Coast would be really helpful!
Hope you're having a great time.
I am at Tweed Heads at the moment ... Queensland/NSW border, living on my small sailing catamaran. I will be here for another few weeks then sailing up the Qld coast - how long will it take, I dont know but I know it will be fun and relaxing. Lots of places to explore and visit as well as enjoying meeting new and interesting people.
I have a spare berth for a female and you would need your own sleeping bag - share expences.
The boat is a small sailing catamaran, self contained with its own power, water, internet connection, etc. think like campervan or small caravan but on the water. Basic and simple living at its best.

Don't forget to do some sort of a reef trip and diving/snorkelling up near Cairns, it's amazing and something you might not get to do elsewhere in Australia.
