I would say:
3 meals fast food - $16. a day
2 meals fast food + 1 cafe meal with tip - $25. a day
what about some volunteering or similar.
I've met a few people on my travels who've done WWOOFing http://www.wwoof.org/ they enjoyed it and recommended it.
Some friends of mine have volunteered in Pisco, Peru (to help earthquake survivors; I know you're not going to S/America but there should be similar situation in N/America).
I say about 30-40.00 per day, if you want to splurge.
A good trick, is look for happy hour specials. You get some tasty morsels, and cocktails at a great rate. Cool thing about big cities, especially in LA and the City ( San Francisco) you can find awesome deals if you mind your surroundings.
If you traveled with Suntrek on your California adventure, you might have stayed at my hotel, going to Yosemite!
Make your way to Arizona, Grand Canyon is a must see!
