Diary

Hi,
I have just seen that the diary function will no longer be used on Travellerspoint. What will happen to the diary entries I have already put up? Will I lose these if I do not transfer them to a blog?
I have made an entry for pretty much every day of my four and a half month holiday with still another four months to go. I will be devastated if I lose all of this information, and as you can imagine transferring each and every one of these entries to a blog will take a long time online, something that is not easy to find while you are moving in around, especially in Ecuador. Can I just leave the entries I have already made?
It is such a shame the diaries have been removed as I was writing diaries for myself and then blogs for family and friends. Thus feature is one of the reason I chose travellerspoint.

You can move all of your diary entries to a new (separate) travellerspoint blog in one go (there's an import function which does this for you), and you can set that new blog private and password protected, so that it will be in effect exactly the same situation as you have now - one blog for your family and friends, and one private password protected blog for yourself. (It used to be that blogs couldn't be password protected, and so it made sense to have blogs and diaries exist next to each other. But at this point blogs finally do everything which diaries did, and much, much more besides it, and so it doesn't make sense to maintain diaries in separate form anymore.)

I don't know exactly how Sam and Peter are planning to phase out the diaries. I very much suspect that they won't take any rash actions, and that you'll be able to access the data you put in there for a long time to come yet. Obviously they need to communicate a bit more about what's going to happen with this, but for the moment I wouldn't worry too much.

Ok, I have done this but come across a problem. All of my diary entries were dated. This date has been transferred across to be the date that the diary entry was last accessed or updated which is good. But the date did not transfer to the section underneath the blog section. So now If I go into an old diary entry and edit it, it changes the date it was last accessed to today's date. So a diary entry from two months ago sits at the top.
So I now have old diary entries that are mixed with the new ones. If I accidentally go into the diary entry and forget to fill in the details underneath the blog of the date of the entry before I save changes then the date of that blog is gone and it takes me forever to work out what it was. Basically I have a big mess of blogs (old diaries) now and I will have to go back into all 126 entries to re-record this information.
Maybe for anyone else transferring their diaries to blogs have it set up so the date from the diary is permanently attached to that entry and can not be changed if you chose to edit the entry itself. It is going to take me a really long time to do all of this.
I hope that made sense. I am sure there are people who have more diary entries than I do who will have a similar problem.

Hmm, that's no good. If you give me a day or two, I'll try fix this up and we can re-import your diary entries with all the right dates attached. Your diary entries are all still there, they just are marked as deleted. Interesting that you are the first to notice this problem with the importing - it was used quite heavily when the blogs were first launched.

Ok, that would be great. Even if you could make my diary available to me again I will just pop the dates in the diary entries themselves.
I am just particular about the dates I guess as I have been on the go while now. And I have enough problems remembering what I did last week let alone three/four months ago.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I found the bug!

I've un-deleted all your diary entries. I haven't touched your blog entries though. You will see the option to import your diary entries showing again in the blog. However, if you do this, you will end up with all your entries in duplicate. Two ways we can fix this.

1. You can delete them all yourself prior to importing. If there are any that you have edited, then you might want to leave them. I don't know.
2. I can delete them all for you in one hit. I think this is the easiest for you, but first let me know which ones I should leave alone. There might be new ones you've added since moving over.

Once all the entries are cleared out, then hitting import will bring in all your diary entries again.

I wonder if we added a new date field after most did their diary importing some years ago? Anyway, great to see it fixed!!

I just moved my 11 diary entries over to a new blog. It took all of the titles, and it appears all of the text - but the text does not display when I click on "view". Only after going back and hitting "publish" for each one does the text appear in the blog. The text appears in edit mode and preview mode but if I don't click publish and just view - nada.

You have a diary?! I assume we are talking about ? And you are saying that you actually wanted the entry to come across as well... boy, some people are hard to please, aren't they?!

Seriously though, wowsers; what a mistake that is... fixed now. But erm, to be able to re-import yours I have to give you the same options as Pete:

3. You could actually just edit the entries and they should show. As there aren't that many, that might be the easiest option if you were thinking of making changes anyway...

Thanks for the heads up!

I know - what was I thinking??!!

And yes, that would be the blog. Sorry I didn't include the link in my original comment. Probably would have been a good idea.
I'll just delete them all and import them again. They're being used more as a reminder for Beerman since he's blogging about the Panama trip these days. I just didn't know when the diary area would disappear and didn't want to lose them just yet.
