Im going to asia on the first leg of my trip and plan for a month, but can see me possibly staying there longer.
Am i better and cheaper booking my flight to NZ from the uk or doing it in asia?

I would wait. Bangkok has long been known to have agents (something akin to the UK bucket shops) that sell at very low prices. I used in Bangkok last year - they're quite good.
I can only speak from our experience but the flight we booked in Bangkok was not cheap and we shopped around. Prices for flights are up and down and you can never be sure which will be cheaper.
