Hello guys!

hi Jordan!

there r some tips below

"me and one of my friends from work are looking into going off somewhere this winter"

What you mean this winter? we are in March now - that already spring in many places.
Most of places that u mentioned has opposite seasons - means winter in (yours) summer and vice-versa.
For example: dry (= the best for travel) season in Central America is Dec-Feb.

Travel-partner - is quite important to go with right person.
You two should communicate good, trust to each other and u'd better know each other good enough.
It's cool expirience - to travel alone, but as u never did, 1st time better go with friend(s), u'll feel more secure when u not alone.

You & your friend should begin with checking up these:
1. Time limitations
2. Budget limitations
3. Aims, expectations n interests - that common for both of you.

Depends of 1. and 2. list of your destinations will get shorter.
At general - longer you travel = more economic way you manage/ day.
Flight ticket is usually a big part - about 1/3 of budget.
Travel gear can be costy! - especially when you going to different (from your country) climate. Good backpack costs, but worth.

What about visa? Not every place u need visa, but if u do - it takes time and money.

Many of exotic destinations must vactination(s) before you go. Some of these vactinations comes in parts (serias) and takes about a month or so.

About book (travel guide) - you'll buy it after decide abt destination.
Most popular are Lonely Planet, Footprint Handbooks, Let's Go.. oh, there r many others.

there are many other issues around the trip, but need to begin with something, isnt it?
hope it helped a bit.
good luck,
Vanessa
