Advice on travelling...

Well am ten weeks away from heading off to Bangkok on my own.

For trips etc, I'd say you can safely wait until you're there and often you can even try to bargain a little.

As for accommodation, it depends. I'm a planner sort of person, so I would not even imagine going somewhere without having the accommodations sorted in advance. But I have friends who are very relaxed about it, and would only book the for the first couple of nights, then revise plans and see what to do next before moving along etc.

Sites like HostelWorld take accommodation booking for a deposit of 10%, which is not too big a sum of money to lose if you decide at a later stage to cancel it. But do note some places require at least 24-48 hours notice for cancellation. Whatever that is, it's a peace of mind that you're buying there, by not running into a "homelessness" situation, if you know what I mean.

Depending on where you are at New Year, in general it's not quite as big a deal for the people there so most places won't be celebrating like NYC or Edinburgh. Same goes for Christmas. So I won't imagine a big scramble for accommodation at that time unless you're heading somewhere where you know a lot of foreign tourists are planning to congregate.

The next major celebration in the region would be Chinese New Year (mainly in Malaysia/Singapore), but that's not until 14th-15th Feb. If you plan to be on the road around that time, book the bus/train tickets ahead, because they could be booked up with everyone trying to go home for the celebration.

Thanks very much lil lil!!

Any replies are good as getting a little nervous about it all. I love bargining and just being random so am happy to see what happens. Decided i will make a decision on where am going to be and book new year shortly!!

Thinking the full moon party but ideas change constantly!!

Thans again

i happened to read earlier of a guy looking for travel buddy...
maybe you can coordinate parts of your travel together...
and this way you won't be completely on your own..? best of luck!
