RTW help please!

Hi everyone. Me and my friend are looking at going away next september/october for 12 months. Here is the route plan we were thinking of: America, South America, Asia, New Zealand, Australia and return back home to the UK. I would just like advice on places to visit in the countries we were thinking of? Also how long to spend in each place? I will have around £7,000-£8,000 maybe a bit more saved up. Will this be enough to last me a while, obviously not for the whole 12 months? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Lee.

If you do those places you may want to look going Europe-North America - South America - Australasia/Pacific - Asia - Europe instead of having asia before Australia and hence having to backtrack as you'll most likely need to go back to Asia from Australia to get to Europe.

Places to go would vary depending on what you want to see and do in your trip. You could possibly try London - New York - Miami - Los Angeles ??? - Lima - Buenos Aires - Sao Paulo - Santiago - Auckland (maybe also include somewhere like Christchurch to see both the north and the south island) - Sydney (do some internal travel within Australia) - Hong Kong - Bangkok (do some side trips within South East Asia) - Mumbai (if you feel like a big culture shock) - London. Something like that would be a very interesting trip and maximise your RTW ticket.

When in South America if you like nature you should definitely aim to head south to Patagonian South America. flights on the One World RTW fare go from Buenos Aires - El Calafate in that region. You could then do some overland travel around the area if trekking and exploring remote areas are your sort of thing.

In the USA, New York is a really interesting city to visit. If you are interested in history, museums, architecture then somewhere like Washington DC might be an idea (you can get cheap buses from China Town in New York to Washington DC). Miami is good for some sun and taking a trip to somewhere like Key West or one of the many other nice places in the Florida area. It could be possible to even do something like go New York City - Montego Bay/Jamaica - Miami - Mexico City - South America somewhere.

With regards to money if you live on a budget it should get you by for a while. If you plan to go out getting drunk every few days then your money will go very quickly. I went through about that amount of money in 7 months but I never drunk any alcohol and mostly ate supermarket food in non asian places i.e. where eating out can be quite expensive.

How long to spend in each place varies for different people. Personally I like to cram a lot of stuff in to a short amount of time and see heaps of places. Other people like to take the slow and liesurely approach and spends weeks at a time in one place. I have found spending anywhere between 1 -7 days in a place to be good. 7 days in big cities like St Petersburg or Rome which has heaps of stuff to see and do, or 1 day in a tiny little suburb which has very little to see or do. Where possible I try to get flights or other transport that either goes overnight or goes very early (arriving at destination before 9am) or late in the day (departing at 6.00pm or later) so I get to spend a full final or first day in a place.
