Hiiiii Everyone
As you are arriving in wonderfull land in the middle of summer, I would definetely go in a clockwork direction i.e Sydney to Perth then Darwin etc. This allows you to get to the north of Australia during winter, as you would melt during summer if you are not used to it.
Cheers
Have you organised your accomodation in Sydney for around Christmas/New Years? Things get pretty packed at that time so if you haven't you'll need to ASAP. There's a Travellers Point gathering happening, you can check the sticky thread for info on that.
Because you're arriving at the end of December I'd try and see Sydney and the south coast down to Melbourne while it's summer, the weather will be perfect for swimming and surfing so if you're into that kind of thing that's the time to do it. Depending on the type of work you want to pick up, Sydney and Melbourne are good places to get work. I would probably arrive in Sydney and stay for New Years and get the vibe, see if there's anyone at the TP gathering that's doing a similar thing to you and hang out with them for a while.
If it were me and I was doing it alone I'd do NZ straight after new years, then fly back into Melbourne buy a van and drive up the east coast, aiming to be in Cairns by about June. From there go and visit central Australia and then up to Darwin by about August. From Darwin you could drive down to Perth and aim to be there by around October.
Be flexible with your plans, you'll meet people with great ideas so you can go with the flow.
