Also, be aware that Sunnyvale is about 50 miles south of San Francisco--but an easy ride since you will be going the opposite of rush hour traffic in the morning (meaning that you should plan to stay in San Francisco on both Sunday and Monday night.)

I live in SF and commute from there to the south bay. Depending the time you leave you will almost definitely run into traffic. Will you be spending more time in Sunnyvale or SF? My suggestion would be to stay in a hotel outside of the city. You'll be able to get to the freeway quicker and save a lot more money (SF hotels are expensive). You can find plenty of good hotels in the San Mateo, Foster City, Burlingame area. It's pretty much in between SF and Sunnyvale. You can also take BART from San Mateo to SF. Have fun and good luck!
Actually, the BART system doesn't go to San Mateo at all--it ends up near the San Francisco airport and Milbrae.
I think HngryTrvlr is confusing the BART with the CalTrain--which does go to San Mateo.

To get to San Mateo (or to Sunnyvale) via public transportation, take the BART system to the Milbrae station and then transfer on to the CalTrain system and go to the station selected.
As far as traveling via freeway from SF to Sunnyvale--you will hit traffic in the morning if you take the US Highway 101 freeway which goes through San Mateo--but you won't hit traffic if you take the I-280 Freeway (which is just a bit farther west).
I agree that hotels will be cheaper in either San Mateo or Sunnyvale than they will in San Francisco, but there isn't anything to see in either of these two places--which is the reason for the difference in prices.
