I wish I bought books in the 2nd hand bookstores of Chiangmai or Bangkok. But it wont fit my backpack.
Unfortunately there aren't any 'chain' bookshops such as Borders or Kinokuniya (or even National!) in HK, the best places we have found for buying new books in SE Asia are Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. We have looked a lot in HK and only found one decent bookshop (can't remember the name but it's in the Harbour City shopping mall on Canton Road) and the books are pretty expensive.
Singapore has a great second hand book trade - there are loads of shops near the National Library in a complex and in KL it's against the law to sell second hand books!
Some big Bookstores in big Chinese cities (whats not big), dont have English books. And now, you told me that HK not going to the place for buying books.
What about Macau? It doesnt have to be 2nd hand books. I'm looking for books on culture by scholarly authors like Ian Buruma, Japan topics. But I want Chinese culture, so who is the authority? I might find these books in Shenzhen. I didnt see much last stop to that city, I ended up buying a phrase book, like the last time I hit HK.
