Hi
We are an Australian couple heading to san diego in november, and are after some help on hostel accom.
Heard maybe Lucky D or USA.... Has anyone stayed or know what they are like ??
Also, after some advice on going to Tijuana. Best option, tour or by yourself. Is there somewhere else close enough to go for a day trip maybe instead ??
Thanks
I don't know anything about hostels, but you may find some useful info here:

Tijuana- you don't need a "tour" to go there. You can take the tram from San Diego to the border, walk across to downtown Tijuana (15-20 minute walk). If you drive, park on the U.S. side and walk across. The Mexican border cities have had a lot of crime and violence lately, so you need to be extremely careful.
A much safer daytrip (assuming you have a car): drive to Julian up in the mountains, maybe 90 minutes or so east/northeast of San Diego (head north on I-15, exit onto Poway Road, thru Poway and Ramona). Julian is a cute little town, known for its apples and applepie. Then, continue east, drive down the mountain for about 30 minutes and you will be in Borrego Springs in the desert. Not much to do there, but spectacular nature and the contrast in nature and weather in those 30 minutes is absolutely amazing.
Hey there
Me and my girlfriend stayed in the USA hostel which was really central and had a really nice atmospehere. It is set ina kind of old house and breakfast etc is provided which is a bonus.
The hostel ran trips to Tijuana every Saturday but me and my girlfriend decided to go by ourselves. We got the tram to the border and walked across, and had a wander around stayed for dinner etc. Coming back from Mexico into USA took a lot longer but in general its very easy to experience Tijuana by yourselves if you so wish.
Hi
Thanks for the help, think we will stay at the USA and do a trip over the border ourselves.

Hi,
Me and my friend stayed in San Diego for 4 nights and stayed in Lucky D's Hostel. Out of all of the hostels we stayed in during our trip this was certainly the best! The location was ideal as it is situated a couple of blocks away from the well known Gaslamp Quarter. The hostel had a great atmosphere and all the staff were friendly and great. The good thing we found was that breakfast was provided each morning (cereals and pancakes) along with complimentary tea and coffee throughout the day. They also have something going on each night for the guests, when we stayed the first night we went out to a few local bars which was a laugh and met quite a few people. On one of the other nights they also had a special for like $15 which included a trip to a padres game (which is also a few blocks away) and beers before hand
As well as things like this they do free meals every other night or something where a worker from the hostel will cook and guests can get fed for free.
All in all I would definately recommend this place, also while we were there my friend was unfortunate enough to have his passport confiscated by a local bouncer. The hostel owner was very kind, rang the police and embassy etc and even lent my mate her iphone!
Hope this info helps

I lived in SD for 4 years. You won't need a tour in TJ (Tijuana). May I suggest you check out Rosarito instead of TJ. It's dirty and very shady now. Rosarito has a great beach and nightlife.
Looking for a hostel you should check out Ocean Beach. Good hostels out there. Cheers and safe travels...
