Anyone know the trend of ticket prices from Aus to NZ for January. I was going to fly over Christmas but the prices are crazy high, even in Jan they are looking higher than the $100 flights that were going last year.
there are daily deals on the airnewzealand website which might be worth checking out

Yeah I knew about grabaseat but they are only domestic. Their blackboard deals are usually business class deals that are way over priced. Ive never seen any good deals from Air New Zealand. thanks though, still havent booked the flights and hoping virgin blue or jet star will go on sale.

Grabaseat do occasionally have international flights (a friend of mine got an excellent deal to Tokyo recently) but I agree that deals with Air NZ are hard to find.
I got an email from Jetstar a few days ago advertising sale deals to Australia - I think the deal should still be on.
I was able to find a half price (NZ$199) flight from Auckland to Sydney for 30th of December by shopping around and ultimately booked on Virgin Australia. I think you'll find the cheaper seats get sold soonish.
$100 flights!!! That must have been some promotion because prices are never that low even in quiet times from Sydney to Auckland (the most commonly flown route with most competition). You are also talking about travelling at the most popular time of the year so of course prices are going to be more (the airlines could practically name a price and they'd fill the planes regardless if it was $500 one way or $50 one way).
Flight prices are more expensive this year than last year. Just to give you an idea last year for a date in December it was $1399 from Sydney to Santiago and this year dates around that same time are closer to $3000. Last year most airlines were almost going bankrupt having some rediculously cheap airfares that were basically below cost just to fill seats, this year people are travelling more so prices are back to the regular sort of level where the airlines are actually recovering some of the billions of dollar losses they made last year.
