Hi Guys
6 days is not necessarily too long, but you don't really need more than 3 to get a really good feel for . The nice thing about the Netherlands is that nothing is far away, no matter where in the country you are Amsterdam is roughly in the middle, so even easier, and train connections are excellent, so if you find 6 days in the city is a bit too much, you could visit Leiden/Delft/Den Haag/Utrecht/Volendam etc. They all make great little day trips, and some could even be combined into one day trip. If you want to go even further away you could consider Maastricht which is a great city to spend a day or two in. It's about 2 hours by train from Amsterdam. That's pretty much as far away from Amsterdam as you can get too, without leaving the country that is
Meh! I'd offer to show you around, but next week that's going to be totally unpossible!
But yeah, what Sam said. I always recommend Leiden, Delft and maybe Haarlem as being really worth seeing; their inner cities are much more compact than Amsterdam, and make for a great walk around. (Utrecht will no doubt also recommend Utrecht, but don't listen to him, he's just biased.)
Amsterdam is not really a big city, so you can reach almost everywhere by foot. Try to walk as much as possible and enjoy its wonderful streets and canals. This is my most beloved city ever!
Thanks for the tips guys now heres another question for you....
If we wanted to get a train to another European city say Paris for example how difficult would that be and would it be overly expensive?
Oh and l guess its easy enough to hire bikes in Amsterdam? And is there any theatres or shows we could check out there at night?
Cheers again
Heather
Taking the train to Paris would be very simple. There are several connections per day, tickets are sold in the international ticketing office on Platform 1 inside Amsterdam Centraal station. Expect to pay around 100 EUR per person for a one-way ticket to Paris. You might be able to get special offers if you buy online in advance, see

Tip: Since it is quite a long way to Paris consider going to Brussels from Amsterdam. Fare to Brussels would be around 40 EUR.
Bikes are thick in Amsterdam, IIRC there were about 4 bike hire shops alone around Centraal. You won't have a problem finding one.

If you can't find a reasonable train fare, it will work out cheaper for you to take the Eurolines bus. They have an office in Amsterdam. You just show up there and buy your ticket at the desk. As easy as 1-2-3. From what I can recall, a one-way second-class train ticket to Stuttgart from Amsterdam was 90 euros- and that was back in 2002 . . . and bought a week in advance.

There is a direct train from Amsterdam Centraal to Paris Nord (via Rotterdam and Brussels), operated by 'Thalys'. They have a website and some good prices if booked in advance. The Amsterdam - Paris - Amsterdam train is superb and really doesn't take too long.
6 days in Amsterdam can be either too short or too long depending on your tastes. It's not a very big city and the cultural parts can be done in a couple of days, easy.
Everywhere is close by if you get off at Centraal Station and then jump on either a tram, bus, local train, or even a hired pushbike. The city is just excellent for cycling round/across and the public transport system is one to be proud of. Pick up your free Amsterdam guide at either Schiphol or Centraal Stations.
Wonderful city, wonderful people.
Utrecht is worth a look and I'm not being biased
if you want a short train ride to a cute city with a chilled night life you could get a train to Ghent in Belgium...............Maastricht is also really nice, there is even hills there ( don't listen to the locals when they say mountains ) , its also well known for having really good food.......
For whats on in amsterdam you could check out ..... http://www.iamsterdam.com/en/whats-on
