How did you get around N,America

Lots of people wanting to travel around N.America but i can give little help when it comes to how to accomplish the transportation needs of some one who is only going to be here for a short time and is on a limited budget,Back in the late 60's i spent 3 years hitch hiking around this great continent,i've also spent many years driving a truck around most of the continent, and have spent every vacation camping,Rving,or motelling it to some part of this great continent, the key is to have a reliable car so you have the freedom to go anywhere but how does some one afford a car when they will only be here a month or two?.

For those of you planning on getting around the USA take note of the lack of responses theres a reason for the silence, and i'd suspect that reason is its so expensive that no ones ever done it

Well, you are correct--renting a car (or an RV) for a month is not cheap, especially if you plan to drop it off at a location other than where you picked it up.

Generally your best plan is to either get a weekly rental rate (and then extend it for multiple weeks) or else see if you can get a car from a dealer/rental agency that needs a car forwarded to another location and will give you free use while you drive it from the point where it is to the point where they need it.

This, of course, means you don't get to choose in which direction you travel--but at least the travel would be either cheap or even free.

I'we been going trough the forum about buying cars in the States and going cross country, i would like to know if it is any different buying an older car (lets say from the 1960) is the paper work the same, and afterwards I would like to ship the car to Europe.

Sounds like a big hassle to get here then spend a lot of your vacation time and money trying to buy a classic car from the 60's then go through all the trouble of shipping it back to Europe.
Heres some info from another forum on some one doing a similar export of a car..

If you decide you want to risk driving a 50 year old car around the USA There are helpful sites like this one
