I am travelling for the first time in South East Asia from March until June and I was just wondering what is the best way to book a hostel. I will arrive in Bangkok (not sure what time yet) and I don't know if I should book a hostel before a go (judging by the reviews and stuff on the internet) or should I wait until I get there and look around and see what I like the look of?
I don't think there is a "best" way, just your preferred way. If it was my first night, I'd personally be booking in advance. This allows you to choose a place carefully and all you need to do when you arrive is find the place.
I can't think of anything more annoying than being jetlagged and having to scour the streets comparing all the options (not that you can tell on the outside anyway). That said, you might find something cheaper. Each to their own I guess With several months of travel, I'm sure you can try both ways out. For the first night though, I'd book.
I was swaying towards booking before I leave. Its probbaly the best way as it is my first time travelling alone.

On bigger trips I usually book the first night or two in advance. After a long flight it is nice to know that you don´t have to deal with finding a place to stay right away. For me at least it is less stressful.
If I was flying in late at night I would want a place to go to right away instead of carrying everything I own knocking on doors. Even with a few suggestions you could just call some places from the airport and ask them to hold a room for you.
Where to stay? If you are a kid, under 20 maybe choose the Khao San Road area which is popular with young travelers. Slightly older maybe stay in the lower Sukhumvit Road area where you will also find budget hotels and hostels. You will also have use of the Skytrain in the Sukhumvit Road area too!
ummm....nah, don't book anywhere. Just arrive in a city where you don't speak the language and expect to find a bed to welcome you when you get off the plane....why is this question asked again and again?
sorry mate, didn't realise some people could get so annoyed by a genuine question. It's my first time travelling and I just wanted some basic information. Is that alright?
Not annoyed by it, but it is just so obvious to me. Why would you not book a room? I didn't mean to sound rude or anything, sorry if I did. But please, my advise is to just book a room at least for your first night. Genuinly sorry for any offense taken.
