Ahs anybody seen the Aurora Australis (southern lights)

Hey there - just wondering if anyone has ever seen or heard of anyone seeing the Southern Lights from New Zealand and if so what time of year, where they clear/often etc??

Anybody???????

Hello there. Yes I have seen them from a small town called Waikouaiti just north of Dunedin on South Island. I was there in May 2005. The best time to see the lights is between March and September. Outside of these months theres very little chance of seeing anything.
I must say though that although there are many more visible stars in the southern hemisphere, the Southern Lights werent a patch on the Northern Lights I saw in Iceland and Canada.

Coool - were thinking of being there anytime between May and July - I know they wont be just as spetacular as the northern ones but were gunna be there at theat time in the south so may as well have sa look see for them!!!! :-) I just want to see them sooooooooooo much!!!

You wont be disappointed as long as they show. Sometimes its as if they dont exist and other times they go on for hours.

Antarctic winter is apparently the best view of the Aurora Australis. I want to eventually go there and see.

I saw the Aurora Borealis once while standing on my head in Northern Finland.... Does that count?

(Sorry Gilly)

The northern finland is fair enough. How does the standing on your head work?

As I said earlier the Northern Lights are much better. From my experiences anyway.
