Hello......Im going to Milan with my girlfriend from the 13th to the 16th of December, was just after any helpful advise on what to see, best/cheapest areas to drink/socialise in etc.
Milan doesn't have to be expensive at all. The easiest way to do it cheap, is to just follow the local students and see where they drink and eat. Students in Italy are not up there with the richest, but they still have great weekends.
Milan is a superb city for everything. You'll love it.
A couple things to do in Milan:
the Duomo (you can go on top of it and experience wonderful views of the city- make sure it's open)
Cenacolo Vinciano (museum that houses The Last Supper)
A typical tour of Milan includes:
- the Duomo and Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery
- the Scala
- Sforza Castle and his park (parco Sempione)
i suggest you to visit some other churches, like Santa Maria in San Satiro with its marvellous tromp l'oeil (it's near the Duomo...on Torino street...a way full of shops... so you can do also shopping...), or San Lorenzo (where the witches were burned) or Sant'Eustorgio (where the 3 Wisemen were buried) or San Bernadino alle Ossa (with its walls covered by bones)...
if you want to see the Last Supper, it's better if you have a booking because there is a lot of people and only 25 people at time can enter...and for 15 minutes...
if you like art, consider to visit Palazzo Reale...there are some exhibitions (for example, Edward Hopper...)... or the Pinacoteca di Brera...or the Triennale...
if you like sport, on 13 december there is Milan-Palermo in S.Siro stadium
and in the Sempione Park there is the Aquarium of Milan...it's little, but it's free.. (and i work and study here )
if you look for night entertainment, you must go on the Navigli or in Corso Como... but if you look for discos, i can't help you, i don't like dance...
a typical (well...i think there is everywhere ) thing you can do in the evening is the "happy hour"..generally from 19 to 21 (i know..it's more than a hour )...you can enter in a pub-bar and with 5-7 euro you can buy a drink and eat all you are able to eat (some places are more generous than others )
there are a lot of pubs everywhere...specially near the Arco della Pace, Corso Como, Garibaldi...some are very sophisticated...
consider that you will come near Christmas and immediately after the feast of Milan (S.Ambrogio, 7 december), so the city will be full of people committed to do shopping and the streets (specially in the centre) will be decorated...it's a beautiful period...probably there will be also a outdoor ice rink in front of the Duomo..
streets for shopping are typically via Torino, corso Buenos Aires, San Babila and all the centre....via Montenapoleone (if you are really rich

Aaah aperitivo - how I miss that! I think that's quite typically Milanese rather than everywhere. And it is a good way to eat cheaply.
My friends also used to take me to this pizzeria where the queue is always long, it's a real student hub, and the pizza is huge, delicious yet cheap (€4-€6 on average). Can't think of the name right now though. I think it's not too far away from Bocconi. gpucri, do you have some idea which one I may be talking about? That could be a nice recommendation for carpet8 and his girlfriend.
(I guess I could email and ask one of my friends but they all haven't been living there for quite a while now, so not sure if they'll recall quickly)
By the way, carpet8, since you're there near Christmas period, you should buy either some authentic panettone or pandoro that you can give your family as gift. Maybe Pandoro, because I've seen panettone being sold by Aldi and Lidl even! Also, a bottle of Moscato d'Asti can't go too wrong if you know someone who likes sweet wine with a wee bit of fizz.
ahah...yes..the aperitivo! hey..you know very well our way to say...and to eat!
uuh...i'm sorry...i don't know the pizzeria you said...there are a lot of them...maybe it's "antica pizzeria fiorentina" or "be bop" or "Al Penny" or "superpizza" or "a'pazziella" or "officina 12"...boh...
however it's not difficult to find a pizzeria in italy, so i'm sure that carpet8 and his girlfriend can try it (don't buy it in the centre of milan, near duomo, in pizzeria for tourists...it's expensive and probably it's frozen...go in a real pizzeria...if a pizza costs more than 8 euro, it's a theft)
oh yes! panettone and pandoro! good idea!
you will find them everywhere in that period! uh...pandoro is good, but panettone is the authentic Xmas sweet of milan...i also suggest to carpet8 to take one for his parents/friends... you can find them from 2-3 euro (industrial ones) to 20-50-80 or more euro (artisan ones)...
and naturally a good spumante, like lil-lil said...

Lol, I guess to pinpoint one single pizzeria is quite a crazy thing to do, especially when there's so many around. I agree though, not to eat at the central/touristy area. And indeed, if anyone pay more than single digit price for pizza, it's robbery.
I guess I suggested pandoro because they're not easy to find elsewhere comapred to pannetone which has really been getting quite a recognition in Europe. Luckily for me, I can even find some industrial Italian brand name ones here (in Dublin) so I'm definitely going to get some for Christmas
"Una buona forchetta", hehehe, that's the first I've heard of the term but yes, I do loooove food! It's hard not to when many of my family is involved in the food industry (chefs and restauranteurs). They trained me well since I was born!

time ago i was chatting with a boy in chile and another one in corea...and i discovered we were watching the same movie (V for vendetta) and eating the same food (a pizza with peppers)!!! incredible!!!
the only difference was that it was lunch for me, dinner for the corean boy and breakfast ( pizza with peppers for breakfast?!?!) for the other one!
maybe you tried also the colomba di pasqua (easter dove) and the uova di pasqua (easter chocolate egg)...
but maybe you don't know the !
it's not a real panettone, but the form is the same...it's stuffed with different layers of mayonese, salame, different types of cheese, different types of ham, salad, also shrimp...it's like a super-sandwich!
naturally it's not a sweet, it's an antipasto (a pre-dinner), you eat it with the aperitivo (for example, a campari...)
do you miss milan?!? come here with carpet8 and his girlfriend and we will go to eat a pizza all togheter!

Yes, globalisation is everywhere. Perhaps this will shock you - I've seen, last year, Marks & Spencer has their own brand of panettone! (I'll PM you with the other chatters - don't want to detract the topic of conversation for this thread)
By the way, if you have some time to spare, perhaps you can help to update/write the TP Travel Guide to ? Or other cities that you're familiar with?
Ps: carpet8, I know it's winter and all, but don't forget the gelati! There should be plenty of ice cream places around, and many of them are made on the premises or home-made. Typically, choose the size or number of scoops you want, pay for it, then bring the receipt/ticket over to the serving counter, where you can choose the flavours you want.
