Unusual Schengen/WHV question from an Australian

Hi all.

Making an educated guess I suggest the following:

Do not fly into Sweden on 23rd June, instead change your flight to another destination, say the UK or Germany.

Enter Sweden after you have travelled around Europe, at the point when you are ready to start working.

I don't want it to start then, instead about the 3rd of August. Can I do this or must I put the first date I actually will be arriving in Sweden?

I don't have an answer to that question, the easiest and most elegant solution would be to enter Sweden when you are ready to start working and not before.

It is very confusing and while I have already emailed the consulate in Australia, and their answer was only "the 2 visas are independent of each other". I take that to mean my WHV doesn't affect my Schengen Visa, which means both start when I first enter Sweden.

As an Australian you do not need a Schengen C visa. You'll get an entry stamp that acts just like a Schengen C visa, but it is not the same. For the purpose of discussing the issues around visa-free stays this entry stamp is somtimes referred to as "Schengen Visa", but the embassy staff might not know this. Also note that many staff members at embassies are not very knowledgeable about visa-free stays inside Schengen, take their advice with a grain of salt.

I would say that in your case the WHV is indeed independent of the visa-free stay. But entering Sweden before the WHV starts might cause some slight trouble.
