vienna - belgrade train

is the train busy? will i need a seat reservation or am i cool just to jump on and grab a seat? also does the train split off at anypoint and go in different directions?

There are many different services to Belgrade. Some go via Budapest, others depart from Vienna straight into Slovenia and beyond and there are other services too. It's a good route and on some trains it might be advisable to get a seat reserved. However do it at the station, not on-line. It's very rare if ever at all, that the train you want to take will be full. I would suggest, if you have the budget, take the Franz Lehar Express from Vienna to Budapest, then the overnighter that calls at Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade and on to Athens. It's a little more expensive, but a wonderful trip. The whole trip including the Franz Lehar, will cost you about €65.
