Caxton FX Card

Hi everyone,

Hi I used it last week in Barcelona. I got slighty better rates than my debit card (HSBC) but much better than on the high street and no charges.

Its an OK card for certain things, exchange while abroad etc, and Ryanair wont charge you a card fee if you use their card to book one of their flights on-line.
However, their customer services are terrible - and there are many nightmare stories about Caxton FX cards being swallowed up in ATM's even though the pin number's correct and the credit's good.
Good and bad is the correct description.

Hi all,
I recently joined with the Travellers point and my last backpacking trip was to different parts of Europe (Belgium, France and Switzerland). I used my Caxton Global Travellers card like a Mastercard when I went out to eat and went shopping. My mum got a Caxton Euro Card and got me added on for a Global card because I headed to Switzerland and had to use the Swiss Franc. You can take out money from the ATM's without a charge and there's no transaction fee on every time you swipe, I gave it my stamp of approval and am using it again when I travel to New York this summer.

If you need any advise on using the Caxton service, my relatives and I use the cards a lot and my uncle uses it for his company.

Cheers xxxx

There was a programme recently that did view the Nationwide credit card as the preferred credit card but I have seen on other travelling blogs that since then they have increased their charges and now I think its one to avoid. From what I've read the Caxton Fx card has had a lot of positive reviews although I haven't actually used it myself yet. I've used the Which magazine as the basis of my comparison and it has Caxton Fx as its 'best buy'. I am looking to travel throughout Europe and was thinking to get both cards, the Euro card for countries using the EURO and the global traveller card for the countries not using the euro currency.

Where did you read this? It would be useful to know a little more about the actual circumstances. Is this a problem with Caxton or does it happen with other cards maybe?

I've used the Caxton Global Traveller card lots - never had any problem and in fact I'd say they were pretty fantastic compared to virtually all banks and BS's. Card has always worked for me and the rates are certainly better I can get elsewhere. I guess Nationwide could have been a contender but you had to change your bank to get the overseas discounts and now they charge just like all the rest. I do use a Halifax CC as back up but use Caxton for all else.

Not quite sure where the negative stuff about their customer service has come from, they are there 7 days a week and have been fine whenever I've needed to speak to them. Great staff who know what they are doing. Top banana, I'd say.

I just have to add that I have a Caxton Eurocard which I've used loads in lots of European countries. I've had one or two difficulties, no fault of Caxton, but each time they have given me amazing service, they have always been on the end of the phone, and even once refunding me money that I had had to spend extra because a hotel receptionist had made a mistake with the Eurocard! Definitely a card I can heartily recommend.

Since this post first started, almost a year ago - Nationwide have now started charging for using their Flexaccount Debit Card abroad in Europe.
