Anyone know of good beaches, with low cost accommodation in Malaysia.
The are gorgeous and have cheap accommodation but they are a bit of a journey from KL. You could also try which is closer to KL - I haven't been myself but a friend of mine really liked it there.

In case this thread is found by means of the search function, allow me to add that you don't necessarily need to go to the islands to find great beaches. The bays on the mainland, just north of Mersing offer awesome beach recreation too. The stretch from Air Papan, to Tanjung Resang and to Penyabong, for instance, is becoming more and more reknown for its enjoyable beaches and various sport and adventure activities.
The reason I mention this is because oftentimes the bottle-neck to go to Tioman is the (lack of) availability of ferry tickets to the islands. Booking a ferry ticket can be quite a challenge to begin with, but added to that the number of seats is quite limited too, so holiday-makers are quite often left stranded. For these people, the Air Papan, Tanjung Resang and Penyabong beaches are a great choice to divert to.
This is also the case during school holidays, traditionally a time when the Tioman resorts tend to be booked to capacity.
Just back from Perhentian Islands and loved it! Off the main tourist trail but still very easy to get around. Cheep options for accommodation are there and also some beautiful hotels. Spectactular marine wildlife and beaches!!
