Travelling/working in Oz for six months - starting Sept 2010

Hi everyone - I'm 26 living in the UK and have been thinking about travelling around Australia for such a long time but I finally feel 'ready' to do this! Initially I wanted to do it for a year but I think due to other commitments in 2011, six months is probably more realistic now. I plan to get a WHV and go in September(ish) time.

If you're coming in September and staying 6 months you'll be leaving in February or so which is summer over here, if you want to visit areas up north then you'd be best off doing that in September/October and staying south for summer from December-February.

I'd probably fly into Cairns and travel down the east coast if you're on a WHV you can stop and work if you find something good. Over summer I'd stay down south and travel from Sydney to Melbourne then Adelaide and if you have time over to Perth, you could either fly Adelaide-Perth or catch the train/bus.

Is there anything you're interested in particular? I have some pictures in my photos on this site you can have a look at to get some ideas.

Hi Tim, thanks for this advice re: seasons etc. My original plan was to travel/work over 12 months starting in Sydney then to Melbourne, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Perth, Darwin, Cairns then back to the east cost to Sydney to fly back to the UK but now I have bridesmaid duties in June 2011 (!) which is why I can't go for 12 months. Although as long as i'm back by May 2011 then that will be okay, but I think I may be slightly too optimistic thinking I can work my way round my original "list" of places in a shorter timeframe as it's a lot of distance to cover.

My main concerns at the moment are firstly whether to go for one of these "package deals" where i would pay for eg the first five nights accommodation in Sydney or somewhere, rather than getting there and not knowing which way to go. I am not used to living in a large city so this is going to be rather a culture shock for me! I know i would probably spend more money if i did one of these deals but in a way i find it reassuring as there would be other first time travellers there in the same boat who i would be able to chat to. Secondly I worry about not finding enough work - obviously I have money saved for the trip but dont anticipate spending all of this/just this, i want to work as I go. Should I be signing up to recruitment agencies etc before I go do you think?

Anyway thanks again for the advice and I will certainly check out some of your photos!
