Hi all
Use the first day to visit the main sites in Bucharest: the Palace of Parliament (a modern day equivalent of the pyramids :-), the Village Museum (dozens of traditional houses gathered from villages throughout the country and relocated to one of the massive parks in northern Bucharest) and the old quarter (a small surviving part of pre-20th century Bucharest; you can spend the evening/night there, it's full of clubs, bars, restaurants etc. - ignore the endless renovation works).
The city is reasonably safe, there aren't any areas you should really avoid. Be careful if you use taxis, some of them are rip offs - always check the price per km before entering any cab (don't take it if the price is more than ~1.4 lei per km).
On day two for a change of scenery do a day trip to Brasov, a historical city (=well preserved medieval quarter, fortress, old churches, beautiful location right next to the mountains etc.) in southern Transylvania, about three hours away from Bucharest by train.
