I would never drive in China (Not even a bicycle, knowing what my friends living there for years told me happen frequently there, foreigners getting asked money for injuries being always "responsible" even if the local intended the "accident")
I agree with the comments on this official website here about driving

Ive read that you cant actually legally drive in China on an international licence...
you have to have a chinese driving licence...

Thats a dream trip...had posted in many web sites for a like minded traveler
hadn't found one so far.
I would love to join...but getting permits to drive a car through will take quite some time.
Having driven most of Europe, Uk, Ireland, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt & off course
The incredible India...I believe I can drive in any situation.
Just registered in the web site & havent filled any part of my details.
