Hi guys,
Its seems that the most popular option nowadays is to buy a national simcard for the country you're in. Be it the USA, Australia, the UK or South Africa - they all sell them. In some countries they are free, in others there's a charge but they come loaded with a small amount of credit (usually around $5 or so) already on them.
The nice thing about them is that although the fee for calling overseas might be a little steep, all your incoming calls will be free. Ask around as to if they have deals on different simcards for contacting your selected countries.
As an example - in the UK it's possible to buy a simcard thats cheaper for callin g and texting Asia than it is for the USA and then again you can buy another thats cheaper for calling and texting Russia than it is for Canada. There are just thousands of different simcards available across the globe nowadays. I doubt you'll have any problems finding one that fits your needs.
