South America 2011 - Anyone going?

Hi There!
I have just decided to go travelling to South America on my own in 2011!
I am just looking into where to go, what to do and how long to go for... Details will be dependant on my budget.
Though my plan is to start in Rio for Carnival and then work my way around and up to Cuba and then into Mexico.
Any advice or suggested things to do or Not to do would be appreciated!
If you want to chat, let me know!
Cynthia

Hey

I'm heading to South/Central America next year too. Planning to start at the Carnival and fly out of Mexico City 7-8 months later, but haven't got much more planned.

Just in the process of trying to sort out Carnival tickets and accommodation...d'you have any idea where the best places to stay in Rio are? And what night is best to get tickets for the parade?

Hi Dave,

I'm still researching my trip etc... So much I want to do, so little time!

Im planning on arriving in Brazil around the 27th Feb 2011 and going to Rio and then up to Salvador for the massive parties and then heading to Mexico and working my way around and down back to Buenos Airres where I will fly home around the end of May 2011. What are your plans?

As for where to stay in Rio - I've been advised to stay in Ipanema - Its apperantly the "safer/better" area.

Not sure which night is best to get tix for Carnivale... If you find out, please do let me know!

Sent you some info on the Hospex Portals, one has thousands of membrs in Brasil, start getting in contact with them soon as possible. Cannot help anyonne plan their trip online, impossible.

Hey guys I too am hoping to do SA next year starting at the carnival! The dates are the 5 - 8th March. I believe you can buy tickets there where they are much cheaper, I think!!! I would hate to get there and find otherewise, but the prices on websites I have looked at are pretty steep!! If you find any more info please let me know!

I will continue to research

Hey,

Me and a friend will be going to SA around June 2011 and staying there for 3 months before heading to Mexico for the final 3 weeks of our trip. Landing in Buenos Aries then planning on going to Chile. No further plans though as SA is a bit of a minefield to us!
Anyone know how easy it is to travel around and how expensive it is at the moment? All info gratefully received!

I live in Sao Paulo, can I can answer a few things, but generically. I dont have names or numbers of which is best for carnival... It is sooooooooo overpriced (min $200). Sometimes it good to go to a small city and they will have one. Can see on tv too here. Most people are either involved with carnival, or they dont even go to it. Prices for hotels double to triple in price (about $160 per night) and thats for a 2 star hotel. Hostels become full or they already are. You NEED to reserve now or you will have no choice but to get a hotel. Hotel Ibis is the cheapest in Rio. Plan NOW to save money or not spend as much.

As for expenses in South America I will list the countries I have been to and how cheap compared to USA.

Most expensive to cheapest.

1. Brasil- most expensive country in SA. Even more expensive in Jan and Feb ( about 50% more for air, hotel, packages etc.....) Best meat restaurants in the world. Churrascaria are everywhere and all u can eat meat. Up to 40 kinds of meat, and personally Picanha and Fraldinha are the best. They have filet mignon, ribs chicken etc.......... More expensive in Rio though.

2. Chile- similiar to Los Angeles in prices. Car rentals a bit expensive.

3. Peru- word of mouth

4. Argentina- bit cheaper than USA almost everything (about 10% cheaper)

5. Uruguay- Ibis hotel is cheap in Montevideo but prices vary with everrything else. depends what you buy/do.

6. Venezuela- I was there recently for a canada soccer game ( pity me, i know) and prices are really cheap or really expensive including blackmarket rate. Gasoline is practically free but water is expensive. Food is expensive, hotels in Caracas are stupidly expensive, but Margarita Island (on everyones wish list) is relatively cheap. All transportation is except flying is soooooooooooo cheap thanks to Chavez. Caracas is expensive and not worth one full day there except the teleferico (gondola). Merida has the longest or tallest, not sure which, gondola in the world. Beer is terrible. Drink the brasilian beer ( Brahma).

7. Colombia- About 20-30% cheaper than the states except maybe 10% for hotels.

I could include Panama which is a fantastic country where everyone speaks english and is either equal to the states or cheaper and is very clean country.
