Best annual travel insurance?? please help :-)

Hi,
I've just booked my flights for the 1st of sept 2010 for a year to oz and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for which insurance company we should go with? I have underactive thyroid but i'm not planning on making any trips to the docs whilst i'm their but would like to be covered! we would also like to be covered for any activities - any help on who to OR not to go with - many thanks - soph

Hi Soph,

I felt like I've been going around in circles on this one myself, looking up various insurances and checking reviews. IMO the best ones that I've found that will actually take any claim, if you have to make one, seriously are ones underwritten by companies such as AXA.

Insurances such as Insure & Go, Go Insurance, 24/7 are reasonably priced but reviews suggest any claim made is like getting blood out of a stone. Although I suppose you have to bear in mind that only disgruntled customers will post a review so....

Anyway, I think I've finally settled on getting mine with Amercian Express - reasons being it will still cover you if you have to return to the UK during any part of your year in Oz and since life is unpredictable I wanted that option. Plus it has a reputation to uphold, it's underwritten by AXA, rated 5 stars this year by Defaqto (independent financial services research company) and reviews I've found seem to be positive.

The main thing to consider is that you have all the main options you want covered, in some cases you will need to add the option to have any activites covered which may cost more. Just make sure you read the policy booklet before you buy as they have clauses for everything they cover. Other thing to look for is a 24/7 helpline, esp since you'll be on the other side of the world.

Hope this helps!
Jess

Hi Jess,
Thanks for that, i'll get looking into that company - it's a nightmare having to look throuh all the polocies but its got to be done - it's so nice to be able to ask for help on this site otherwise looking for the right insurance is like looking for a needle in a haystack lol - thanks again - soph x

No Probs - let me know how you get on and if you find any better deals! I haven't booked mine yet as I'm also heading out on 1st Sept and figure I still have some time.

Where are you heading to first? Are you doing Oz Intro or going it alone?

Hiya

If you've got pre-existing medical conditions you may have to get quotes from a few to find the best rate and ones that will cover you. Just check with whoever you phone about what you have/had and they will be able to advise you. Underactive thyroid is quite common (I have it too) so it may not affect the price and is sometimes waived/covered anyway but you should definitely check this.

In the end i went with insure and go. I have other pre-exisiting medical conditions (not just the thyroid thing) and for me they gave me the best cover and the best price.

Some companies, incl. the one i went with have a list of what they do and don't cover activity wise which is quite useful so you can have a look what you're planning on...or think you might like to give a go and see if you need extra cover. Again, if you phone you can always ask them too. Also, to save money and time on phone calls, some companies have their policy worcings online to download so you can always read through and get a good idea first.

Hope that helps, good luck. I felt a lot better when I got my insurance sorted out! And also, for me, it was a chunk out my travel budget so useful to know what's left
