Very new to the whole RTW idea. I am 40, single, no kids, no job, no house, no responsibilities, etc. I am in good health, and have a budget of approximately $50K US dollars.

Currency? $ is a very common symbol for various currencies.
With that kind of money, I would island hop to some of the world's remote spots - St. Helena, Pitcairn, Easter Is., Galapagos, Borneo, and to the mainland of Indochina, China, Mongolia and Russia. Look at taking the train from China to European Russia, ferry to Finland and into Arctic Norway and then to Greenland via Copenhagen or Iceland. Don't let it be known that you're wealthy, or you won't be for long!
Seems to me this will take quite a bit of planning as you don't want to be stuck in Greenland in winter.

Not wealthy at all. Pretty much sold everything, put some money aside for safety, and am using the rest of travel.
And you're right, this is going to take more planning than I can imagine.

I would consider travelling around South America for awhile. It's cheap, there are tons of fun adventure type things to do (trekking, kayaking, rafting, biking etc.), and there are plenty of backpackers to befriend along the way. There are also plenty of remote type places considering you could spend months in the rain forest without ever retracing your steps. 50k is a pretty large amount for a trip like this - I expect that you could travel for at least two years comfortably and probably 3 years on a shoestring with that kind of budget.
A life-changing amount of money and no commitments. Have you thought that you could extend your trip pretty much indefinitely if you worked your way around the world? No problem with funds if you chose to stay somewhere and needed to prove self-sufficiemcy. You could take part in all of the activities you mentioned in your own time and just keep going. People probably do it for a lot less I reckon.

I have thought about extending my trip indefinitely. I taught high school for the last 11 years here in the US. I had a stoplight epiphany on the way to work several months ago. I quit my job, sold my house, and sold most of my personal belongings. Basically, right now I own a kayak, mtn. bike, truck, camping equipment, and some clothes.
A few weeks ago, I was much more ignorant than I am now, as I thought I would just hop a plane to some place with a travel guide and go, but I now realize that I need to do much more planning beforehand to ensure success.
Places I'm interested in are SE Asia, Central and South America, Australia and New Zealand, and Eastern Europe, to name a few.
I truly appreciate all the input I am getting.

3. I generally like active stuff (hiking, kayaking, skiing, rafting, biking, snorkeling, camping, exploring, etc). Not too big on museums, opera houses, gardens, and other high-brow cultural events.
4. I want to travel light (and cheap, see #1)
5. I want to go places off the beaten track. In fact, I want to go places that make people say "Where's that? I've never even heard of the place!"
6. I'd like to see a variety of places, but spend enough time in each place to not feel rushed.
7. Cool, friendly, chill people.
I might be blowing my own trumpet here, but Scandinavia sounds ideal for you. It's not the cheapest, but during the summer it's easy (and very safe) to camp; it's outdoorsy, adventurous and nature-based. There's tons of activities, people are nice, the culture is slightly strange but interesting and you can find a heap of places off the beaten track, such as Svalbard, the Faroe Islands and the Finnish and Swedish Lapland to name a few. I'm sure you'd get quite a few people asking "where's that?"

Ofelia is right! Scandinavia will give you tons of chances to go hiking, rafting, camping, exploring... a real adventure! I'm actually working for Visit Norway so feel free to post any questions and, if you are worried about the budget, you might be interested in a competition we are running to go to Norway in August. How long would you want to go away for?

you can do an awesome round the world trip with this kinda budget!
