Driving across Canada

My wife and I would like to drive across Canada next year to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary but at around $7000 hiring an RV is out of the question - so I'm toying with the idea of buying a 2nd hand car and selling it at the other side - anyone tried this? Complications?

Buying the car wont be a problem just bring money, selling the car quickly at a reasonable price at the other end will be the challenge as you'll have to advertise it for a while then sit by a phone and wait for potential buyers to call, could take a week or more.

When you take into account insurance, breakdown cover and almost certainly taking less than its street value at the end of your trip, then maybe hiring a car would be the way to go instead of buying one. But, having said that, hiring an RV could save money on hotel and meals costs when not staying with friends (something you can't do with a car unless you live in it) plus it would give you total freedom as to where you stay overnight. Might be worth the extra, but just my thoughts.
Good luck with your choices.

Renting an RV for this trip wont give you much change out of $10,000.
Rental car with tent and a couple of camping cots would be very affordable if you are into camping,
If you rent a car and do motels your average nightly price would run $75-$150 a night.
How about a several week rail pass where you will have the freedom to debark and embark at your own leisure in various places across the country
Or simply rent an RV/van/car and just travel around Canadas maritime provinces.
The concept of traveling across Canada may sound adventurous but there isnt a whole lot of scenery between New Brunswick and western Alberta.
