Northern Florida, off the beaten path ideas

My boyfriend and I are headed to Florida in September. We will be watching a space shuttle launch, mainly, but also want to see Florida without heading to crazy touristy areas. We are more interested in CHEAP and historical or nature-type activities. I guess you could say 'off the beaten path' type ideas. We will be staying somewhere between St. Augustine and Titusville on the coast. Any ideas or suggestions? What are the 'MUST SEE' attractions that are worth it? Thanks!!

First of all, if you don't mind driving about 4-5 hours each way, a trip to the Everglades is a must, as is a trip to the Florida Keys (the islands south of Miami). Be sure to take a ride on an airboat when in the Everglades--this is a blast!! The Keys are known as just a place to go and relax, drink, and hang out and forget all your troubles (think Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville).

Go visit an alligator farm (bet you didn't know that they farm alligators, did you?)

Arrange for a tour of the NASA space center. See if you can go maybe about a week before the shuttle launch when the shuttle and the giant rocket motors will still be in the assembly buildings.

One non-touristy touristy attraction is Cypress Gardens--a beautiful place just a short ways south of Orlando.

St. Augustine is America's oldest city. About the only problem with this is that most of the old buildings have either been torn down or fallen down. (Unfortunately for you, the best preserved old city is on the other side of the country at Santa Fe, New Mexico.)

If you want to go see some bird sanctuary (think marshlands), head to the Lake Woodruff area just west of Daytona Beach.

Enjoy

Enjoy that space shuttle as its goint to be the last one,get there early.
Plenty of nature and conservation areas a bit south and west of Titusville,Check out the San Sebastion inlet area..
