Seems to me you want to travel as light as possible, and that means no tent.
Do not bother with a tent, but bring your sleeping bag. There are so many hostels for cheap that it does not make sense to bring a tent, especially because hostelling will allow you to meet other travelers and share ideas about how/where they have stayed for cheap (or free, in exchange for a little work like cleaning). The sleeping bag will be useful though for hostels that may not have bedding, or for a couch somewhere. Happy travels!
I am in the same predicament! However i have decided to go without if i need one its easy to pick up a cheap tent in most places which can be thrown after use.
