People no longer do this. There are still private rooms, but the best way to find them is now online. Search for "Pension" or "Privatzimmer" plus the name of the city. The tourist information can also help.
For Munich try the links from www.muenchen.de, for Frankfurt click yourself through from www.frankfurt.de
But if you don't mind a cheap and clean hotel I can recommend the Meininger, www.meininger-hotels.com. It is a hotel+hostel chain. In Munich they are close to the train station and in the lobby it will be easy to meet other people.
TP also has an accomodation search, sometimes there are private rooms in there too.
I am having a difficult time locating a place to stay in or near Munich. I checked the place you recommended and they have no rooms.
Is there a place I can contact that can help me arrange for a place to stay?

You may not get your own room, but you would be able to stay with locals. Germany has over 81,000 registered members. I can't find specific statistics for Frankfurt and Munich, but as major cities would expect them to have several possibilities.
'Vrienden op de Fiets' is definitely a way of home style lodging. It's widespread in the Netherlands and Belgium, and there are over 100 families in Germany. However, most hosts are located in the border region with the Netherlands (Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bremen). You can check their locations at

Prices are very pleasant but offerings are limited to cyclists and hikers. So, unfortunately this information will be more useful for other readers of Travellerspoint than for you.
