NY, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia should take care of a month..forget the south or if you must think Charleston or Savannah.

not to try and change your mind again, but i travelled 4 months in north america, and without doubt all my best experiences were on the west coast, dont know if youve travelled it already but san diego is awesome, LA has lots of cool stuff, san fran is great fun too + you have vegas as well, i just found the west coast alot better weather, friendlier people and just more fun on the whole! dont get me wrong east coast was good but id pick the west coast over it every time!
d03mm you can have a great time anywhere you go whether east coast or west coast but with only a month to play with i'd definitely make it one or the other.East coast is going to be more about the big cities and what they have to offer, west coast is going to be more about the mountains and the ocean and the scenery. San Francisco is an interesting town, LA is a bit too much traffic and pollution for me, Vegas can be a thrill.

Well, it's been mentioned before, but it really depends on whether you want to visit cities or stick to natural attractions. Of course, it can be combined in some way, though the focus in the west is nature, in the east cities. You do mention only cities, so I guess your first though about the east might be the better option. In the west distances between interesting cities are bigger.
It also depends on whether you like to rent a car or not. In the west, I would surely recommend that, in the east, there are quite good train and bus connections and distances between them are lower.
Maybe if you tell us some more of your interests, we could be of more specific help as well

Sounds good - and the fact that you're doing it all by air, gives you so much more scope.
My suggestion....
NY, Philadelphia, Memphis, a cheapo to as close to the USA/Mexico border as you can get - then a quick excursion into Mexico (just gotta be done), with whatever you fancy doing in between. Personally, I prefer that side of the USA to the West Coast - but each to there own.
Sounds like the makings of a lotta fun.
Having lived on both coasts now its hard for me to suggest one over the other.
NY and the east coast ( specifically NYC) offers you a lot culture and a lot to see. the cities are closer together so if you are for seeing more cities in a short time its easier to spend a few days in each city on the east coast then it is on the west. Starting off in DC then going to NYC and then to Boston would give you enough to write home about.
West coast however has its amazing cities too! the beautiful thing about the west coast is that you can drive the entire trip from San Diego to SF all along the coast...giving you a wonderfully scenic route. SD is a lot of fun, LA can be a bit stressfull, and San Fransisco is wonderful.
If you coordinate your trip properly i bet that you can do both coasts in 3 weeks...just make sure to leave the most amount of time for NYC and a drive along the coast on the west.

If you're going to try to do both coasts, don't drive - you'll spend all your time driving.
However, there is an option open that hasn't been discussed yet. While I agree that NY (one of my favorite places), Philadelphia, Washington and New Orleans (whre I live) are all great cities, what about natural geography. Try to take 10 days, fly to/and out of Denver, and go to the following Parks: Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Devils Tower, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton. You won't be disappointed.
If you can't make that and do the California thing - make sure you go inland to see Yosemite National Park. If you're leaving soon, you probably won't be able to get reservations there in the park.
My own preference would be to skip LA and San Diego (big cities, too damn many people and traffic) and go to San Francisco, then make your way over the Golden Gate, go up through the Napa Valley, and then to the Redwoods national park. Go on to Portland and Seattle and try to find some whale watching expeditions. Several go out of San Juan island north of Seattle (only way to get there is by ferry.
Have fun, the US is a beautiful place. My wife and I have been to 47 states, and still ahve 3 to go.
