Mapping Problems

Hi Guys

Hey Jason,

Actually, one of the reasons we were keen to drop our old mapping system was that it was proving to really lag heavily on maps with a lot of trips. Sometimes to the point where it would just outright fail. Or even crash the server. Obviously not desirable! We've worked quite hard to make this new system as efficient as possible. And in *most* of our tests they do in fact load like lightning considering how much information is being drawn up. Then again, on dialup, I can definitely see that there would be a much longer wait.

Your problem with loading times actually sounds similar to some issues I had on a sluggish testing computer of ours. It was not the result of the internet connection, but rather something to do with the machine's hardware (graphics card maybe?) and its capacity to draw those trip lines. If I changed it to just draw straight lines - loading times changed from 60 seconds to about 3 seconds. We could probably make it optional to turn off the curves for display purposes if you like? I'm going to guess that will help your situation a lot.

Re: saving. This was a known (major) bug that we pushed a fix live for about 5 hours ago. Did you get these errors after that point? If so, it's probably that your map's cache is corrupted due to your earlier non-successful attempts. We can clear that up pretty easily. Let me know if it's still happening. Probably means we need to clear up a lot of other people's caches as well.

Another thing is not so much an issue as a request I guess is that is you are editing the details of a stop and you click save, it seem to take you right back to the start and to the list of trips. I have not yet been able to do it myself because its not working but if I was wanting to add alot of stops one after each other this could get a bit cumbersome. Weaher it be on clicking save it creats a new stop automaticly or there are two buttons one which says 'Save' and another 'Save and add new' or something.

Fair point. There is actually a way of continuing to edit stops without saving; use the little green arrows near the "Stop x/x" text to go to the previous / next stop. In fact, you can click on any link inside the map interface and that information in the form will still be valid. It will be saved whenever you hit save at the top of the map. The interface is not very clear on that point though. Definitely room for improvement.

Adding Stops I encounted this when in a trip and clicking the '+' symbol on the last stop to create a new one. It ocme up with the message over the map 'where do you want to go' and I have been typing Maputo which is says it canno't find which I find odd as Maputo is already in the trip as a previous stop.
It has also go me thinking about when I would like to add custom stops that are listed and how I would do this if I need to type an actual name.

Maputo not showing up is very strange. I'm guessing it's due to some lag in the connection. Adding custom stops is still possible. You can type in a location near where you want the stop to be. Then you can drag the marker to wherever you want it to actually end up. In the form on the left, you can change the "Custom label" to whatever you want to actually show up.

What I could see that might work is something wheeby you can hide that massive map and therefore stop it from loading and just enter your mapping data.

Yeah, that would be a good idea actually. Not the easiest thing to implement quickly for you, but it would certainly make sense in the near future. We have plans to provide some alternate ways to get mapped trips in there - this would be a logical one.

G'day
Just want to say that the new feature for mapping photos works fantastic. Some weeks ago I tried to map a photo to Pangi, Pentecost Island, Vanuatu and couldn't even get close. For my map I'd used Google Maps and entered the lat/long but couldn't do that with the photo.
I've just edited that photo and it now maps to the correct spot.
Thank you and well done
Now I'll have to review my other photos.

Well that's nice to hear

Hi Peter

Thank you very much for your time and reply, is one thing I love about you guys!

I'm still pulling my hair out here and have just resorted to writing down all the details on a piece of paper after trying for about 30 minutes for a few days and just waiting a few weeks as I know its all very new

I'll let you know the problems I am still having though.

1) The trip list doesn't appear to be in the correct order even though the dates are still the same etc. This is also for trip that I haven't tried to edit as well.

2) The little green arrows that you mentioned are there except for when you are editing the last stop of a trip there is no "right" arrow so now way to progress to a new stop without returning to the stop list and then the map 're-loading' itself

3) Adding new locations - This is not working for me at all now. I understand in what you mention that if a location is not in the list you can add a closer one then edit the details and location later. The problem for me is that it can't find any location. After entering a location in the "Where would you like to go" box is SOMETIMES displays the location in the drop down list properly or SOMETIMES displays it for a few seconds then the list changes to location that start with the same letter and thats about it. Either way when clicking any location and then 'add' is is always displaying the message "location not found". This is particularly frustrating as I then can't even enter lat/long numbers or anything as the location must be from the list.

4) Saving - still having major issues here after making changes and thinking I have saved then as the "saving data" overlay has been on screen for more than 10 minutes I have no other option as to refresh the page as it is stuck and once I have nothing has been saved at all

Other than that I can't really give any feedback on the other map features as I have not being able to get to then. What you mentioned about the ability to change the display settings sounds like a good idea.

Thanks Peter
Jason

Hey Jason,

Can you let me know which browser you are using, and maybe some details about your computer's specs? Most of these problems you are describing are not happening for everyone, so we need to narrow down what specifically causes it if possible.

Can you point me to which trip is not sorted in the correct way? That would certainly be a bug if that's the case.

Hi Peter

It looks like most of those issues have been sorted by being back in civilasation and on a faster machine.

Just a couple of things though. I now have three trips called 'M/Y L (Sept 2010 - ??????)' and only one is correct and that is the one which I can actually edit on the map.

As for the sort order it starts off with trips in 2006 then jumps back to a couple of trips in 2005 then jumps between trips in 2005 and 2006 then seems to fall back in order until the trip 'Aus Trips' which dates back to 2003 I think and should be up the top.

Glad to hear it works better for you now!

I'm not sure what is going on with those two dud trips. It's clear that they have somehow saved incorrectly or are stuck in a cache somewhere. I'll have to look into it.

I have the sorting issue on our to-do list already. My inclination is to sort trips in reverse chronological order, so that the most recent ones show up the top. Only downside is if you haven't dated the stops on your trip, then those undated trips will end up right down the bottom. Then again, that might encourage to provide dates a bit more Right now sorting is by the id of the trip. And the most recently created ones are at the bottom of the list.

Hi Peter,

I am having issues saving any map, reading your posts in this thread it may be because of cache issues, if you coud clear it down on my username?

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian, I don't think this is the problem in your case. There are two caches that operate with the trips. One is stored in the database and the other in memory for fast access. There is no cached entry in the database for your userID. And the one in memory is cleared daily.

What browser are you trying to use this on?
