Probably you can chill out in Negombo area which is close to airport....Night life? i doubt very much in Negombo.There are many hotels in this area.
This area is a bit far from the city and takes about 1hr to reach the city.
Incidentally, since you will be visiting in Dec, please check visa regulations. Earlier SL government wanted to remove visa on arrival facility but the very next day it has put its order on hold the very next day. So no idea when and what way SL government will take action.
