Hello!
It'll depend on where you want to go exactly, I'd say most of the places you want to go in central Australia will be fine with a normal 2wd car as long as it isn't wet. I did a quick trip throught the centre last July and there was water over the road, up to 60cm deep in places which a normal car might not like, this is a rarity and in April it should be ok.
In WA a 2wd van will be ok, the roads are sealed to most places of interest. I'd recommend having a detour down south and visit Esperance, Bunbury and Pemberton all of which are nice. There are a few places up north where you might not be able to go in a 2wd such as the length of the Gibb River Rd, the Bungle Bungles and camping on the beaches but if you need to save money that's probably ok.
